How to Use the ES Overnight High and Low

By Hamza Hamed, Founder of HamedTrades · Published · Updated · 4 min read

Direct answer: The ES overnight high and low mark the extremes created during the Globex session before the U.S. cash-equity open. Traders use them as reference points for premarket structure, liquidity and opening-session reactions. A break, rejection or reclaim can be useful context, but the levels are not automatic buy or sell signals.

By 9:30 a.m. ET, ES has already been trading for many hours. That overnight auction creates a range before the U.S. stock market opens.

The highest and lowest prices in that range are commonly called the overnight high and overnight low.

Why They Matter

They show where overnight buyers and sellers reached their furthest accepted prices.

Those levels may attract attention when U.S. liquidity arrives because many traders have observed the same range.

Define the Session Consistently

The futures trading day begins in the evening. A common approach is to measure the overnight range from the Globex reopen at 6:00 p.m. ET through the 9:30 a.m. ET cash open.

Your platform may use different session templates.

Consistency matters more than arguing over a few minutes.

Opening Inside the Overnight Range

If ES opens between the overnight high and low, the market begins the cash session inside established overnight balance.

Possible behaviors include:

  • rotation toward the opposite side;
  • failed breakout at one extreme;
  • eventual acceptance outside the range.

Do not assume the first touch must reverse.

Opening Above Overnight High

An open above overnight high can signal strong overnight demand, but it can also represent an extended gap vulnerable to profit-taking.

Ask:

  • Is ES holding above the level?
  • Does SPY confirm?
  • Is breadth supportive?
  • Is the move driven by a catalyst?
  • Does a pullback reclaim the level as support?

Acceptance matters more than the first print.

Opening Below Overnight Low

The same logic applies on the downside.

A break below overnight low is stronger when price cannot reclaim it and broader market confirmation supports weakness.

A quick move back above the level can signal a failed breakdown instead.

The Reclaim Setup

One common framework is a reclaim.

Example:

  1. ES trades below overnight low before the open.
  2. Cash session begins.
  3. ES reclaims overnight low.
  4. A higher low forms above the reclaimed level.

The overnight low now becomes part of a bullish thesis.

The invalidation is not “because overnight low exists.” It comes from the structure that forms around the reclaim.

The Rejection Setup

Example:

  1. ES rallies into overnight high.
  2. Buyers fail to hold above it.
  3. Price returns into the overnight range.
  4. A lower high forms.

That can create a bearish framework.

Again, the level provides context; price behavior creates the setup.

Overnight Range Size Matters

A 15-point overnight range and an 80-point overnight range do not create the same opening environment.

A very large overnight move may mean:

  • a major catalyst already occurred;
  • the market is extended;
  • stops need more room;
  • contract size should be reduced.

A narrow range may produce a stronger expansion after the open—but not always.

Combine With Other Levels

Overnight high/low become more interesting when they align with:

  • previous-day high/low;
  • VWAP;
  • gap levels;
  • higher-timeframe support/resistance;
  • opening range.

Confluence can create a more meaningful area than one isolated horizontal line.

Common Mistakes

Blind fading

The overnight high is not automatically a short.

Blind breakout buying

A one-tick break is not proof of acceptance.

Ignoring data releases

An overnight level can be destroyed instantly by CPI or employment data.

Using the wrong session template

Know what your indicator calls “overnight.”

Bottom Line

The ES overnight high and low summarize the market's pre-cash-session range. They are valuable because they give traders shared reference points before 9:30 a.m. ET. Use them to frame acceptance, rejection and relative location—not as automatic signals.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ES overnight high?

It is the highest ES price reached during the defined overnight Globex period before the U.S. cash open.

What is the overnight low?

It is the lowest price reached during that same defined overnight period.

Should I automatically short overnight high?

No. Strong markets can break and hold above it. Watch the reaction and broader context.

Why are overnight levels important at 9:30?

They summarize where futures traded before cash-market liquidity arrives and can become widely watched reference points.

Does the exact overnight session definition vary?

Yes. Charting platforms and traders may define sessions differently, so use a consistent template.
