What Are SPX 0DTE Options?

By Hamza Hamed, Founder of HamedTrades · Published · Updated · 4 min read

Direct answer: SPX 0DTE options are S&P 500 Index options that expire on the same trading day they are being traded. They can react very quickly to SPX because little time remains before expiration. That creates high gamma sensitivity and rapid time decay, so entry quality, position sizing and predefined risk matter more than simply predicting direction.

0DTE means zero days to expiration. An SPX option is 0DTE when today is its expiration date. Cboe lists SPX Weeklys across the trading week, which has made same-day index options a regular part of the market.

Why SPX 0DTE Can Move So Fast

With only hours or minutes remaining, near-the-money options can become highly sensitive to small SPX moves. Gamma and theta become especially important.

Gamma

Delta estimates how much an option may change for a one-point move in the underlying. Gamma measures how quickly delta changes. Near expiration, gamma can become large around the money. That is why a 0DTE option can suddenly accelerate when SPX begins moving through a nearby strike—and why gains can reverse just as fast.

Theta

Theta represents time decay. A 0DTE option has no extra day to wait for the thesis. An out-of-the-money option can lose remaining extrinsic value quickly when SPX fails to move enough or moves too late. Being right eventually is not enough.

Implied Volatility Still Matters

0DTE premium is not driven by time alone. CPI, FOMC, jobs data, sudden headlines and volatility shocks can reprice implied volatility. A trader can see the underlying move in the expected direction while the option behaves differently than expected because volatility and time are changing simultaneously.

SPX Expiration Mechanics

SPX is a cash-settled, European-style index option. There are no SPX shares delivered and no early assignment. However, traders should still verify the exact series because SPX has different settlement conventions across products; many Weeklys are P.M.-settled while traditional standard monthly contracts can use A.M. settlement.

Strike Selection

Cheap, far-out-of-the-money contracts are not automatically low risk. They may require a large SPX move before expiration and can lose value quickly. Near-the-money contracts cost more but usually provide more direct sensitivity. The useful question is: Which strike expresses the setup while keeping dollar risk acceptable?

Position-Sizing Example

Entry premium: $7.00
Planned exit if invalid: $5.20

Risk per contract:

($7.00 - $5.20) × 100 = $180

Three contracts create about $540 of planned premium risk before slippage. If that is beyond the risk budget, the solution is fewer contracts, a different structure or no trade.

Stops Can Slip

A stop is not a guaranteed fill price. SPX can move quickly enough that an option jumps through the planned exit. Position sizing should leave room for slippage, wider spreads and news shocks.

Time of Day Changes the Instrument

A 0DTE option with six hours remaining behaves differently from the same strike with 20 minutes remaining. Near the close, the recovery window shrinks and gamma can become more concentrated. A setup that feels manageable at 10:00 a.m. may be far less forgiving late in the session.

Common Mistakes

  • Buying because the contract is cheap.
  • Using too many contracts.
  • Entering without underlying invalidation.
  • Chasing an extended move.
  • Holding a loser because “there is still time.”
  • Treating expiration as a reason to ignore a broken thesis.

A Simple Checklist

Before entering, identify SPX structure, key support/resistance, scheduled news, exact strike and expiration, entry premium, invalidation, estimated premium loss, maximum contract count and first target.

Bottom Line

SPX 0DTE compresses the option's final day into a highly time-sensitive instrument. The goal is not to find the contract with the biggest possible percentage move. The goal is to understand the setup, define invalidation and control dollar risk before entry.
