SPX Settlement Explained: A.M. vs P.M. Settlement
By Hamza Hamed, Founder of HamedTrades · Published · Updated · 6 min read
Direct answer: SPX options are cash-settled and European-style, but not every SPX expiration settles at the same time. Standard third-Friday SPX contracts are generally A.M.-settled using a special opening quotation, while SPX Weeklys (SPXW) are generally P.M.-settled using expiration-day closing values. Traders should verify the exact series because settlement timing changes when trading ends and which market prices determine the final cash amount.
SPX settlement is one of the most important mechanics to understand before holding an index option near expiration. Two contracts can both appear in an SPX option chain while using different settlement procedures.
The key distinction is between standard A.M.-settled SPX and P.M.-settled SPX Weeklys, commonly identified as SPXW.
SPX Is Cash Settled
SPX is an index, not an ETF. There are no SPX shares to deliver. When an SPX option is exercised at expiration, the economic result is settled in cash.
Cboe specifies a $100 multiplier. A simplified in-the-money settlement calculation is therefore:
Intrinsic value in index points × $100 per contract
If a call has a 6,000 strike and the applicable exercise-settlement value is 6,012, the intrinsic amount is 12 points, or $1,200 per contract before any applicable fees or other account effects.
A.M.-Settled Standard SPX
Traditional standard SPX options that expire on the third Friday are generally A.M.-settled. Cboe uses a Special Opening Quotation, published under the symbol SET, to determine the exercise-settlement value.
SET is not simply the SPX level shown on a chart at 9:30 a.m. ET. It is calculated from the official opening price of each S&P 500 constituent. Because all 500 stocks do not necessarily open at the same instant, the final SET value can be determined after the cash session has already begun.
This creates an important practical lesson: the settlement value can differ from the SPX quote a trader sees during the opening minutes.
P.M.-Settled SPXW
SPX Weeklys are generally P.M.-settled. Cboe lists weekday expirations for SPXW, providing Monday-through-Friday expiration opportunities subject to the exchange calendar.
For these P.M.-settled contracts, trading ordinarily continues on expiration day and the settlement value is based on expiration-day closing values rather than the special opening process used by standard A.M.-settled SPX.
For a short-term trader, that can make the expiration workflow feel more intuitive because the contract trades during the same session in which the final closing settlement is determined.
Why the Root Symbol Matters
Broker platforms often display SPX and SPXW contracts together in one chain. A trader may see only “SPX” prominently on the screen even though the contract itself belongs to a weekly P.M.-settled series.
Before holding through expiration, verify:
- exact expiration date;
- root or series identifier;
- A.M. or P.M. settlement;
- last trading time;
- broker expiration procedures.
Do not assume every SPX contract behaves like the one traded yesterday.
Trading Ends at Different Times
Cboe's current SPX specifications state that standard A.M.-settled SPX options ordinarily stop trading on the business day before the exercise-settlement value is calculated. SPXW options ordinarily stop trading on the expiration day itself.
That difference is huge for anyone holding late.
An A.M.-settled contract can stop trading while the final settlement exposure is still tied to the next morning's constituent openings. The trader can no longer close the option during that interval.
A P.M.-settled weekly generally remains tradable into expiration day, although expiring-series closing times differ from non-expiring SPX options.
What SET Risk Means
Suppose an A.M.-settled call looks comfortably out of the money at Thursday's close. Overnight futures rally sharply. Friday morning, individual S&P 500 stocks open at prices that create a SET value above the strike.
The contract can settle in the money even though the trader could not trade it Friday morning.
The reverse can also happen.
This gap between the last tradable moment and the final settlement calculation is sometimes called settlement or SET risk. It is one reason expiration mechanics should be part of the trade plan before the position is opened.
P.M. Settlement Has Different Risk
P.M. settlement removes the overnight gap between the prior day's close and a next-morning settlement calculation, but it does not remove risk.
Late in expiration day:
- gamma can become very high near the money;
- small SPX moves can change intrinsic value quickly;
- liquidity can change near the close;
- a few index points can create a meaningful cash settlement amount.
A cash-settled product is operationally simpler than receiving shares, but its P&L can still change rapidly.
Cash Settlement vs SPY Physical Settlement
This is one of the biggest differences between SPX and SPY.
SPX exercise creates a cash amount. SPY is an ETF, so standard SPY options are physically settled in shares and are American-style.
For traders who do not want share delivery or early assignment mechanics, SPX can be attractive. But that benefit only helps if the trader understands the SPX settlement series being used.
A Simple Pre-Expiration Checklist
Before holding an SPX option through its final session, answer:
- Is this standard SPX or SPXW?
- Is it A.M. or P.M. settled?
- When does trading stop?
- What determines the final settlement value?
- How many index points in or out of the money is the option?
- What dollar amount does one point represent?
- Can the account tolerate an adverse move after the last opportunity to trade?
- Does the broker have any special expiration rules?
If any answer is unclear, closing before expiration may be simpler than learning the mechanics with real money at risk.
Bottom Line
SPX cash settlement is straightforward only after you identify the exact series. Standard third-Friday SPX is generally A.M.-settled using SET, while SPXW is generally P.M.-settled. The distinction changes the last trading time, the prices used for settlement and the risk a trader carries into expiration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are all SPX options A.M.-settled?
No. Standard third-Friday SPX contracts are generally A.M.-settled, while SPX Weeklys and many other SPX series are P.M.-settled.
What is SET?
SET is the special opening quotation Cboe uses as the exercise-settlement value for standard A.M.-settled SPX options. It is based on official opening prices of S&P 500 constituents.
Does SPX settlement deliver shares?
No. SPX is cash-settled. There are no SPX shares to receive or deliver.
How much is one SPX settlement point worth?
SPX uses a $100 multiplier, so one index point of intrinsic settlement value equals $100 per contract.
Why can SET differ from the SPX opening quote?
SET uses official opening prices of all S&P 500 constituents. Those stocks do not all open at exactly the same moment, so SET is a separate calculation from the live index quote.
