How to Use VWAP on ES and NQ Futures
By Hamza Hamed, Founder of HamedTrades · Published · Updated · 4 min read
Direct answer: VWAP on ES and NQ is a volume-weighted average of futures transaction prices for the chosen session. Traders use it as an intraday reference for value, trend and mean reversion. The most important detail is session definition: a VWAP that resets at the Globex open can differ from one that resets at the U.S. cash open.
VWAP is especially useful on futures because ES and NQ have direct exchange-traded volume.
But the indicator is only meaningful when the trader understands which session is being weighted.
What VWAP Measures
VWAP stands for Volume-Weighted Average Price. Prices that trade more volume receive more weight in the calculation.
That makes VWAP different from a simple moving average.
Session VWAP
A futures chart can calculate VWAP from the Globex session start or from another chosen reset time.
Some traders use a full-session VWAP beginning at 6:00 p.m. ET. Others focus on a cash-session VWAP beginning at 9:30 a.m. ET.
Both can be valid. They answer different questions.
Always know which one your chart displays.
Price Above VWAP
When ES or NQ holds above VWAP, buyers are trading above the session's volume-weighted average.
That can support a bullish intraday framework, especially when:
- price makes higher highs and higher lows;
- pullbacks hold VWAP;
- related markets confirm.
But above VWAP is not an automatic buy signal.
Price Below VWAP
Sustained trade below VWAP can support a bearish framework.
A rally into VWAP that fails may become a resistance test when the broader structure is bearish.
Again, context determines whether the level matters.
VWAP Reclaim
A reclaim occurs when price trades below VWAP and then moves back above it.
The strongest reclaims usually include more than one fact:
- key support holds;
- VWAP is reclaimed;
- a higher low forms;
- ES and NQ confirm each other or relative strength is clear.
A single one-tick cross is noise.
VWAP Rejection
A rejection occurs when price tests VWAP and fails to regain it.
In a downtrend, that can support continuation if market structure also remains bearish.
Trend Days
On strong trend days, ES or NQ may stay on one side of VWAP for hours.
Trying to fade every extension back toward VWAP can be expensive.
Trend structure should take priority over the assumption that price “must” mean revert.
Range Days
On balanced days, VWAP can behave like the center of rotation.
Price may cross it repeatedly.
That makes breakout-style VWAP signals vulnerable to whipsaw.
ES vs NQ VWAP Divergence
Comparing both can reveal leadership.
Example:
- NQ holds above VWAP all morning;
- ES remains below VWAP;
- technology leads while broader sectors lag.
That divergence can explain why QQQ is stronger than SPY.
The reverse can reveal Nasdaq weakness.
Anchored VWAP
Anchored VWAP starts from a chosen event rather than the regular session reset.
Possible anchors:
- CPI release;
- FOMC announcement;
- major swing high or low;
- overnight breakout;
- cash open.
This can help answer: “What is the volume-weighted average price since this event?”
VWAP and Position Sizing
VWAP may define part of a setup, but it should not determine size by itself.
If the technical invalidation is 8 ES points away, one ES contract risks $400 before slippage.
If the NQ invalidation is 25 points away, one NQ risks $500.
Use the market structure around VWAP to define the stop, then calculate size.
Common Mistakes
- using different session settings without realizing it;
- buying every VWAP reclaim;
- shorting every VWAP rejection;
- fading strong trends because price looks extended;
- ignoring previous-day and overnight levels;
- using VWAP instead of an actual risk plan.
Bottom Line
VWAP is most useful on ES and NQ as a session-value reference. The edge comes from combining it with market structure, session levels and relative strength—not from treating the line as a mechanical signal.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does ES have real volume for VWAP?
Yes. ES is an exchange-traded futures contract with transaction volume.
Should VWAP reset at 6:00 p.m. or 9:30 a.m.?
That depends on the question being asked. A full Globex VWAP and cash-session VWAP measure different sessions.
Is price above VWAP always bullish?
No. It is context that may support a bullish framework, not a guaranteed signal.
Can I compare ES VWAP with NQ VWAP?
Yes. Relative behavior around VWAP can help identify S&P 500 versus Nasdaq leadership.
What is anchored VWAP?
It is a volume-weighted average calculated from a selected event or time instead of the standard session reset.
